Orpheus Medical adds DICOM network protocol and image format to mediSearch product utilizing RZDCX DICOM SDK
The company capitalizes on advancements made in digital broadcasting and video-on-demand (VOD) technologies, to provide collaborative system that brings OR procedures anywhere and anytime within the hospital.

One key feature to expand upon was DICOM. With this added functionality, Orpheus Medical could provide its customers with standard healthcare IT integration to PACS and other imaging modalities. Supporting the DICOM network protocol and file format is crucial for systems participating in the medical imaging workflow.

Speeding up the development process

To save on development costs and time, the company turned to H.R.Z. for a DICOM software development kit (SDK). The RZDCX toolkit provided the advantage of saving the time of learning the subject matter DICOM. The Simplicity of the API and understanding of the required features translated to reduced development costs.

According to David Rainis, General Manger at Orpheus Medical, it took three weeks from start to finish adding the DICOM features for search and retrieve of patient image in the PACS using DICOM Q/R SCU (C-FIND, C-MOVE), storing snapshots from the video to the PACS using Storage SCU (C-STORE), Storage Commitment SCU and Modality Worklist Query SCU.

THE COMPANY

Orpheus Medical LogoOrpheus Medical brings years of practical in-depth experience in the area of VOD. With years of working with broadcasters, cable operators and more, the Company developed a unique system, MedicVOD, that enables medical teams to archive, view, transmit and edit videos recorded during live medical procedures such as general surgeries, endoscopies, ultrasounds, and more.

THE CHALLENGE

The main function of MedicVOD is to capture and broadcast video camera signals emanating from scope cameras being used in General Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, Neurosurgery and Gastro operations and procedures. MedicVOD is not limited to scope cameras and can also capture any video signal in the OR coming from monitors, ultrasound devices and external cameras. Adding DICOM to the product using RZDCX DICOM Library enabled standard integration to other imaging devices and the hospital imaging archive (PACS).

THE SOLUTION

Orpheus Medical found RZDCX to be instantly pleasing. The API was clear and the examples provided by H.R.Z. worked. Like with many other customers, H.R.Z. team escorted Orpheus Medical during the development and provided timely support.

The goal of RZDCX is to simplify and shorten DICOM Application development. This goal is achieved by providing a very high level API that hides the complexity of the DICOM services behind comprehensive service level commands like Send, Query, Move and Print. Each of these service commands encapsulates a lot of DICOM details such as association negotiation parameters, transfer syntaxes and SOP Classes, Value Representations and many other fine little details that are very interesting for DICOM experts but are not the main interest for the programmers that just wants to add DICOM to their applications.

THE BENEFITS

MediSearch now uses the DICOM protocol to search for patient information and related images in the PACS, connect to other imaging modalities, create DICOM Images and store them in the PACS.
